1000 Books Before Kindergarten!

Reading to your child is a powerful way to boost their brain function. By sharing books with your child, you not only promote enjoyment but also help them develop important pre-reading skills. These skills involve identifying letter sounds, building vocabulary, and gaining background knowledge. Such skills are vital for preparing your child for reading and the move to kindergarten.

Hinton Municipal Library offers the "1000 Books Before Kindergarten" program as a free and enjoyable way to kickstart your child's journey to success! Children from birth to 5 years old are welcome to join. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Grab a kit from the library and dive into reading!
  2. Track Your Reading Progress: Mark a circle for each book you read with your child on your reading log. Want to go paper-free? Download the Beanstack app and join the "1000 Books" challenge to track your books digitally!
  3. Every Book Matters: Even if your child wants to hear the same book repeatedly, you can count it each time. You can also include books your child listens to during story time, at daycare or preschool, or with a friend or family member.
  4. Milestones at 100 Books: Each time you reach 100 books, bring your reading log to the library for a special reward.
  5. Achieving 1000 Books: Congratulations! Visit the library to celebrate, have your child's name displayed on the 1000 Book Wall of Fame, receive a completion certificate, and a prize.
  6. Continue Reading: Don't stop at 1000. Keep reading for a lifelong passion for literacy!

Reading 1000 books might appear daunting, but by reading one book nightly, you can achieve this milestone in under 3 years! Alternatively, reading 3 books each night could see you reach your target within just 1 year! Don't hesitate to ask our helpful staff for recommendations; we are here to support you on your adventure to 1000 Books Before Kindergarten!
